Smokin' Joey aiming at second G1 Goodwood

Tuesday 7 April 2015, 11:46am

Smokin' Joey will be given the chance to claim a second Group One Goodwood in Adelaide next month.

Trainer Wez Hunter said the $500,000 race at Morphettville on May 16 would be the gelding's next start.

Smokin Joey has been freshened since a disappointing fourth in the Blamey Stakes.

"He had a cold. I thought he was below average that day (in the Blamey) and then post that he was a bit crook so we backed off and we've got plenty of time.

"He'll go to The Goodwood and will have a barrier trial before that.

"He'll be coming back to 1200 metres and hopefully he can do it again."

Smokin' Joey won The Goodwood last year, giving Hunter his first Group One win.

The last horse to win The Goodwood back-to-back was Musket Belle in 1911-12.

Smokin' Joey denied Platelet achieving the feat last year, beating the 2013 winner by a half length.

This preparation Smokin' Joey's four runs since a summer let-up have included a Group Three Carlyon Cup win and a second in the Group One Futurity Stakes.

Meanwhile, three-year-old Disposition will have an eight-week break before returning to prepare for the spring.
