Trainer Bjorn Baker will be tempted to test Hugh Bowman's prediction about Gold Ambition sooner than the jockey expects after the two-year-old overcame inexperience to win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Bowman insists Gold Ambition has the makings of a proper racehorse next season after the gelding stumbled his way to a win on a wet track in the Pro-Ride Handicap (1400m).

"He'll be a nice three-year-old, this horse," Bowman said.

"It wouldn't surprise me to see him up with the top graders as a three-year-old."

But Baker would like to see Gold Ambition go to the next level as early as the Group One Champagne Stakes at Randwick on April 18.

"I know in the back of his mind Bjorn thought if he could win and win well today we may even nominate him for the Champagne next week," stable foreman James Clark said.

"From very early on he has always been an impressive horse and the further he goes the better he will get."

A Champagne Stakes win would be a fitting end to the Sydney carnival for the Baker family.

Baker's father Murray won his third ATC Australian Derby when Mongolian Khan outstayed his rivals on Monday while the stable is getting Candelara ready for the ATC Australian Oaks on Saturday.

Gold Ambition started favourite despite drifting from $2.50 to $2.80 and he raced behind the leaders before taking an inside run in the straight to beat Multizone ($13) by 2-1/2 lengths.

On ground Bowman rated wetter than the official soft rating, Gold Ambition's talent made up for any loss of confidence racing among horses.

"He is still learning his trade, he's not straightforward," Bowman said.

"But I knew he had the talent, it was just a matter of if he could put it together."
