The Barrister's all-the-way win on a heavy Randwick track has given trainer Jason Warren confidence he can take another major step in grade.
The Victorian colt handled the right-handed direction with ease to win the Saturday's Listed Fernhill Handicap to set up another 1600m challenge next week in the Group One Champagne Stakes.
Warren and jockey Hugh Bowman said the colt was still learning but would take improvement from the race.
"I didn't expect him to win so easily," Warren said after The Barrister ($6.50) held off Chachapoyas ($9) by 2-1/4 lengths.
Reckless Russell ($101) was another long neck third while favourite Clash Of Clans weakened in the run home to finish eighth.
"We were at Bondi yesterday and watched the weather come in," Warren said.
"The more rain that came, the more excited we got."
The Barrister's first win came in late March in the Mornington Sires' Produce Stakes on a soft track.
Bowman said the colt still had a lot to learn but plenty of ability.
"When he matures he will be a serious horse," Bowman said.
"He is doing it all on raw ability. He is all nerves.
"I didn't want to lead but I needed to do that to get him into a rhythm.
"I had to work with him."
The colt now has the distinction of giving first-season sire Star Witness his first stakes winner.
