John O'Shea was in a philosophical mood as he welcomed back South Pacific Classic winner Federal to the winner's stall at Randwick on Saturday.
The Godolphin trainer could have been forgiven if he was still smarting from the race-eve scratching of Contributer due to muscle soreness.
The horse had been favourite for the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes but O'Shea revealed Contributer would not have taken his place on a heavy track.
"We wanted to play a bit conservative but when the rain came and they put up the heavy eight he would have been staying at home anyway, so you can't worry about it," O'Shea said.
"We're not too perplexed by it all, as long as he's OK and can make it back for the spring that will be great."
Godolphin might also have some fun in the spring with Federal.
The three-year-old sat behind the leading group in a race which turned into a sprint and it was Federal who was able to show superior acceleration on the wet ground.
His acceleration in the heavy conditions surprised his trainer who will now consider a Hawkesbury Guineas start.
"He really let go on the ground. I was a bit concerned about him in the real heavy but he acquitted himself very well," O'Shea said.
"He's got his stakes win now so we'll see how he is when he gets home and assess him after that."
Starting a $2.80 favourite, Federal scored by 1-1/4 lengths from Snake Charmer ($13) with Ygritte ($4.20) another 2-1/4 lengths away third.
