A Flemington win to Kansas Sunflower has confirmed plans to target the Group One Australasian Oaks.
The Luke Oliver-trained filly scored her first city win as she wore down Sea Spray in Saturday's Denis Walter Afternoons Trophy (1600m).
"If she comes through the race all right, she will back up in the Group Three race for fillies over 1800 metres in Adelaide next week and then hopefully progress to the Australasian Oaks a fortnight later," Oliver said.
Kansas Sunflower was narrowly beaten in a 1700m fillies and mares benchmark race during Melbourne Cup week last year, and returned this campaign to break her maiden at Yarra Valley in March before placing in the Albury Guineas.
Jockey Chris Symons had Kansas Sunflower midfield with cover in Saturday's race and presented her at the right time, taking a split at the 300m mark.
Sea Spray ($3.90) hit the front on her inside but Kansas Sunflower, which firmed from $7.50 to $5, kept coming to score by a long head with Bahamas ($9) 1 1/2 lengths away at third.
"She's been getting to the front too soon, but it was a good ride by Chris today," Oliver said.
Oliver believes Kansas Sunflower will handle the 2000m of the Australasian Oaks, run on May 2 at Morphettville, as long as she gets a genuine speed so she can settle.
And he takes confidence out of Saturday's win heading towards the Group races in Adelaide.
"I'm thinking this is probably a pretty good form pointer for those sort of races," he said.
