Rich Enuff on track for spring return

Sunday 12 April 2015, 4:09pm

Trainer Ken Keys is looking to the spring carnival with stable star Rich Enuff and gallant Sydney Cup placegetter Like A Carousel.

Keys targeted the $1.6 million Sydney Cup (3200m) with Like A Carousel and was rewarded when the $151 outsider of the field ran third against a high-class field at Randwick on Saturday.

It was the Cranbourne trainer's second Group One placing for the season.

He went close to his first elite win last spring when brilliant colt Rich Enuff was chased down by Shooting To Win in the Caulfield Guineas.

Rich Enuff won the Mitchell McKenzie Stakes, Danehill Stakes and Caulfield Guineas Prelude in dominant fashion before his Guineas second.

He missed the autumn because of a tendon issue in a hind leg.

The three-year-old will be aimed at a spring carnival return to racing and a Group One win to cement his future at stud.

"He's still spelling. All is going well with him and we don't intend to bring him back until spring," Keys said.

Like A Carousel, meanwhile, is expected be given a break after his Sydney Cup placing with a view to the spring and the Melbourne Cup.

The five-year-old added a Group One 3200m placing to his two seconds in the Listed Sandown Cup over the distance in the past two seasons.

He also finished fourth in last year's Adelaide Cup but was well beaten in the 2014 Sydney Cup.

This time Keys decided to aim Like A Carousel specifically at the Sydney Cup and the gelding went into the race at only his third run of the campaign.

Like A Carousel failed to make the Melbourne Cup field last year after finishing sixth in the Lexus Stakes, the winner of which earns a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption.
