Apprentice Geoff Goold will play a key role in the preparation of trainer Kevin Kemp's Weetwood Handicap contenders.

Kemp trained the quinella in last year's Weetwood at Toowoomba when Typhoon Red beat Kempelly in a close finish.

He has also won the Weetwood with Startell (twice) and Tellem.

Kempelly and Typhoon Red are again being set for the Weetwood and Kemp could not be happier with them.

Goold will ride Kempelly in the Canadian Club Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday but will switch to Typhoon Red in the Weetwood.

Kempelly was placed in Listed class when third in the Gold Coast Goldmarket three runs back and won his last start at Doomben two weeks ago.

Kemp said he had decided to run Kempelly on Saturday rather than give him a barrier trial.

"We booked Geoff because the weights were raised and we decided his two-kilo claim would be a boost," Kemp said.

"He rode Tycoon Red at the horse's last start and he did a very good job. Typhoon Red will go into the Weetwood without another run but he has done very well."

Goold has been doing a lot of riding for Kemp since the stable's No.1 jockey Nozi Tomizawa moved to Korea.

Tomizawa, who won the Weetwood on Typhoon Red, had been keen to return to ride him again but could not get a release from his Korean contract.

Kempelly's hopes on Saturday have been strengthened by the decision to run He Don't Care, one of his main Weetwood rivals, in another race.

Damian Browne will ride He Don't Care in the Mt Franklin Handicap (1200m).

Meanwhile, trainer Chris Munce will use the Cascade Handicap (1350m) to decide whether Lucky Black is up to a winter carnival campaign.

Lucky Black has won his past two starts in restricted class in good fashion.

"He might be up to a race like the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich late in the carnival," Munce said.
