Fontelina on G1 All Aged Stakes mission

Friday 17 April 2015, 3:33pm

Once again Fontelina will be an outsider in a Group One race, but once again his trainer expects him to perform against the odds.

The six-year-old finished fourth as a $71 chance in the TJ Smith Stakes won by Chautauqua who will be among his opponents in Saturday's All Aged Stakes at Randwick.

Anthony Cummings was more than happy with the gelding's TJ Smith effort on the wet track but bookmakers were not so impressed with Fontelina at $41 on Friday and Chautauqua the $3 favourite.

The TJ Smith was Fontelina's second start back from a year on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

"Fontelina was comfortable on the track which was good to see but I am hoping it won't be quite so bad for the All Aged," Cummings said.

"His run in the William Reid before that was also good. He just got too far out of his ground.

"He is a great old horse and a Group One win with him would be a fantastic result.

"He is always an outsider when he runs and he always runs better than his price suggests."

Fontelina came within a nose of a Group One win in the 2014 William Reid at Moonee Valley won by Spirit Of Boom.

In this year's edition he had an interrupted run, finishing 11th of 14, 4-1/2 lengths from the winner Lucky Hussler who also runs in the All Aged.

While some of his All Aged rivals are having the final runs of their campaigns, Fontelina is just getting started with Cummings eyeing the Brisbane carnival.

"The Doomben 10,000 and the Stradbroke are definitely on the horizon as long as he keeps going well," Cummings said.

The trainer's other runners at Randwick are Rhode Assassin in the Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) and Miss Interiors in the Group Three Frank Packer Plate (2000m) Champagne Stakes.

"Rhode Assassin was dynamic at Newcastle when he won his maiden but I'm relying on better ground for him," Cummings said.

"And there's a question about Miss Interiors if it's too wet."

Rhode Assassin finished fifth in last Saturday's Fernhill Handicap (1600m) won by The Barrister.

After leading the field in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes, Miss Interiors dropped out to finish last.

Since then she has finished third in a 1600m race at Warwick Farm after getting back and running on strongly.

"I think we know now she needs to be ridden off the speed," Cummings said.

"She has established a pattern so we'll stick to that."
