Trust In A Gust's final Victorian race didn't go to script as the dual Group One winner was beaten by Red Bomber in an upset at Caulfield.
Red Bomber ($51) peeled off the back of the odds-on favourite inside the final 200m and dived late to defeat Trust In A Gust by a half head in Saturday's $150,000 VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m).
Trust In A Gust was having his first start since Group One wins in the Rupert Clarke Stakes and Toorak Handicap during the Melbourne spring carnival.
After sitting close to the speed, Trust In A Gust ($1.95) took over and was in front from the top of the straight.
Red Bomber was second-up and tracked Trust In A Gust before getting the better of the favourite close to the line.
Trust In A Gust is scheduled to head to Brisbane for three Group One races before he is retired to stand at Swettenham Stud.
Red Bomber's win was a pleasant surprise for his trainer Mick Price and jockey Chad Schofield.
"You wouldn't think an 88-rater versus a 110-rater and dual Group One winner at level weights would be beating him, but that's what happens in this game," Price said.
"I thought he wants 1400 metres but he's had a good preparation and it was a good ride by Chad."
Red Bomber's stablemate Worth A Ransom ($21) was another three quarters of a length back in third.
Craig Williams said Trust In A Gust was gallant in defeat.
"He was nice and fresh in the run and got keen at the 500 metres which is a long way from home, and for him to keep fighting all the way to the line shows why he's a Group One horse," Williams said.
Trainer Darren Weir said Trust In A Gust ran well but his run ended at the 50m.
