Feek eyeing country cups with Lucciola

Sunday 19 April 2015, 3:31pm

Irish import Lucciola is gearing up for a Victorian country Cups campaign before she is retired to the breeding barn.

The mare will be covered by I Am Invincible in the spring and her co-trainer David Feek hopes Lucciola can add to her winning record.

Sunday's Pakenham Cup (2000m) and the Warrnambool Cup (2350m) on May 7 are the immediate targets for the mare.

After a successful training partnership with David Brideoake, Feek has now joined forces with his wife Coral in a new venture.

Lucciola joined their Mornington stable after finishing fourth in the Perth Cup at Ascot on New Year's day when trained by Justin Warwick.

At her third start for her new stable, Lucciola was successful in last month's Stony Creek Cup.

Feek said the 2000 metres at Pakenham was ideal for Lucciola.

The prospect wet winter tracks, especially at Warrnambool, will not be a concern for Lucciola who began her racing career in Ireland before heading to Perth.

At her second start she finished runner-up at Naas to Gold-Fun, now a multiple Group One winner in Hong Kong.

"She started life off coming second to quite a useful horse that now races in Hong Kong on a wet track," Feek said.

"I think that was one of the things at Stony Creek that suited her and while it wasn't a proper bog, the fact that she could get her toe into it a bit really suited."

Feek says although Lucciola will not have raced in seven weeks since the Stony Creek Cup, she will strip fit for the Pakenham Cup after a trial at Balnarring last Wednesday.
