Jim Byrne chasing jockeys' title

Monday 20 April 2015, 2:57pm

Jim Byrne hopes some old friends can help him sweep past young gun Luke Tarrant and win his fourth Brisbane jockeys's premiership.

Tarrant had such a big lead in January that some corporate bookmakers suspended betting on the title.

However, Tarrant has missed much of the past three months because of suspension and interstate commitments.

Byrne has been chipping away at the lead and his Doomben double on Saturday aboard Trakstar and Magic Jewel took him to 46 wins for the season, three behind Tarrant.

He last won the premiership in 2007-08 with 46 wins.

"It is always good to win a premiership but there is a long way to go yet," Byrne said.

He will be riding for Trakstar's trainer Tony Gollan and Magic Jewel's Sydney trainer Clarry Conners during the winter.

"Tony has been using me a bit and I go back a long way with Clarry. So I hope I get some good rides for them in the winter," Byrne said.

Jockey Jeff Lloyd is also looking forward to a big winter after riding a double and then falling in the last race at Doomben on Saturday.

Lloyd suffered bruising and abrasions but was able to walk back to the jockeys's room.

He stunned stewards by wanting to drive home but was advised to let fellow rider Robbie Fradd do the driving.

"It is all part of racing and I don't feel too bad," Lloyd said.

Lloyd will ride at Wednesday's Doomben meeting along with Byrne and Tarrant.
