Adelaide trainer Ryan Balfour got the biggest kick of his fledgling career when River's Lane scored a shock win at Flemington in January.
Balfour had previously held a trainer's licence while foreman for his father David and later they formed a partnership.
Having taken over the stable before his father's death in October, he could not have wished for a better start, notching eight metropolitan winners over four consecutive Saturdays, collecting a $10,000 bonus in early September.
He is now set to have his first Group One runner with Fine Approach, a winner at Morphettville on Saturday, to run in the Sangster Stakes (1200m) on May 2.
This weekend's racing will determine which path he follows with Light It Up.
He has the Goodwood (1200m) or the Robert A Lee Stakes (1600m) on May 16 in mind for the four-year-old.
Light It Up will run on Saturday in either a benchmark 90 race over 1200m at Flemington or the City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) at Morphettville on the Parks track.
After Light It Up's last-start second at Morphettville on April 11 connections want to try him over 1400m, but they would also like to try the gelding over the straight 1200m at Flemington.
"Barriers are quite important over 1400 metres on the Parks track," Balfour said.
"We'd like to see him get every chance to run the 1400 metres out, but if he draws out it makes it tough.
"He will be on trial up the straight at Flemington also, but it's a thing we've talked about trying for a while now.
"One of those races on the weekend will decide his next run."
While barriers will decide where Light It Up runs, River's Lane will contest an open handicap over 1700m at Flemington.
River's Lane was scratched from Flemington on April 11 after drawing the outside barrier, instead running fifth at Morphettville over 1600m.
"He keeps drawing barrier one and doesn't like being crowded up," Balfour said.
"I do think he's looking for further than a mile and it's 1700 metres at Flemington.
"If we get the right barrier on Saturday then he could be one that's over the odds again."
