Srikandi launches Stradbroke Hcp campaign

Thursday 23 April 2015, 12:05pm

A bigger and stronger Srikandi makes her return to racing in the Group Two Victory Stakes at the Gold Coast.

Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher abandoned a spring carnival campaign to concentrate on another Queensland winter for Srikandi.

The four-year-old mare will be having her first start since finishing third in the Stradbroke Handicap in June.

Maher has given Srikandi two trials in the lead-up to Saturday's race and she won the latest at Casterton on April 14.

"We have given her a long spell and she has really furnished into a lovely mare," Maher said.

He had entered Srikandi for both the Victory Stakes and the Listed Silk Stocking for fillies and mares.

"It has worked out well because we have drawn the inside barrier and she should get the run of the race," Maher said.

Srikandi kicked off her Queensland campaign last year with a win in the Silk Stocking and then won the Listed Juanmo Stakes and Group Three Glenlogan Park Stakes.

This year she will tackle the Group One treble of the BTC Cup, Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke.

"We have given her every chance with a long spell and I think she is up to this grade in the winter," he said.
