The annual pilgrimage of Sydney's top riders to Queensland for the winter carnival races has given Jason Collett a perfect opportunity to build on his recent good form.
With Hugh Bowman, Blake Shinn and Kerrin McEvoy all riding at the Hollindale Stakes meeting at the Gold Coast on Saturday, Collett heads to Randwick for a full book of eight rides.
The New Zealand-born jockey celebrated his most significant win during the Sydney autumn carnival when he claimed the $500,000 Provincial Championships Final aboard Sure And Fast.
And he said riding winners on the provincial and country circuits had led to some better mounts in town.
"The last three months have been really good. I've put my head down and it has paid off," Collett said.
"I've been getting winners in the city but also getting a lot of winners at the provincials and in the country which is a stepping stone towards that (metropolitan winners)."
Among Collett's best mounts at the Anzac Day meeting is the Chris Waller-trained Telepathic.
Collett was aboard for her first-up win but lost the mount after she finished a close fourth in the Aspiration Quality with the jockey conceding he got to the leaders too soon.
He has a point to prove when he reunites with her at Randwick.
"I was a bit disappointed to lose the ride. She's had the two runs since in pretty strong company so I'm pretty happy to get the ride back on her," he said.
"She needs soft ground. She's by Mossman, she's proven in it and she's been looking for it in my opinion."
Collett will also ride two-year-old Stimac for Waller in the opening race and Redoutable Heart in the Gallipoli Handicap.
