Melb Cup winner Shocking sires 1st winner

Friday 24 April 2015, 5:52pm

The 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking is off and running as a producing sire.

New Zealand-based Shocking sired his first winner on Friday when Shockaholic won over 1100m at Echuca in country Victoria.

Shockaholic cost his trainer Matt Laurie $NZ75,000 ($A73,000) at last year's New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale.

Since retiring from racing after winning the 2011 Australian Cup, Shocking has stood at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand's Waikato where he has served more than 300 broodmares in three breeding seasons.

He became part of Australian racing folklore when he raced deep without cover before beating the Godolphin stayer Crime Scene in his Melbourne Cup triumph.

A son of Darley's famed stallion Street Cry, Shocking's Cup victory was among seven wins that netted almost $5 million in stakes.
