Desert Man in well-received Gold Coast win

Wednesday 29 April 2015, 4:45pm

There will be few more popular wins during the winter carnival than two-year-old Desert Man's victory at the Gold Coast on Wednesday.

Desert Man is trained by Gillian Heinrich who announced last month she is battling bowel cancer.

Heinrich and her husband Hoss Heinrich are popular figures in Queensland racing and the news of her illness has been greeted with dismay.

The Heinrichs will sell their 200 racing and breeding stock at a Magic Millions sale on May 24 to allow Gillian to concentrate on her recovery.

A $160,000 yearling buy, Desert Man, the well-supported $3.10 favourite, led all he way to win the Mothers Day Package Handicap.

Trainer Bruce Hill continued his recent good run when favourites Eljetem ($2.20) and Miss Husson ($3.60) gave him a winning double.

"Eljetem has had not luck and even lost his rider when a short-priced favourite at the Sunshine Coast on Australia Day," Hill said.

He said Miss Husson had appreciated the return to a dry track with her easy win.

Both were ridden by Hill's apprentice Matt McGuren who is now fifth on the senior metropolitan jockeys' premiership.

"It has been a good season so far and I hope it keeps going through the winter with some good rides," McGuren said.

Sunshine Coast galloper Wimpole Street appreciated a sharp drop in class when he won the Carnival Packages Class 3 Plate (2200m).

Wimpole Street had won only one previous race but had been racing in top company, finishing second to Best Of The Rest in an open handicap four runs back.

Winning jockey Glen Colless said Wimpole Street showed potential as a stayer over even more ground.
