Feature jumps races heading bush

Friday 1 May 2015, 1:18pm

Victoria's feature jumps races will be run on country tracks this year following the closure of Sandown for the rest of the season.

The Sandown Hillside and Lakeside tracks will undergo remedial work following heavy criticism over the state of both surfaces.

The Australian Hurdle and Steeplechase has been transferred to Ballarat on May 31 with the remainder of the flat races from that meeting to be run at Moonee Valley on May 30.

The Grand National Hurdle and Crisp Steeplechase will be run at Warrnambool on July 12 with the Grand National Steeplechase and J J Houlahan Hurdle moving to Ballarat on July 26.

Ten meetings needed to be moved from Sandown with Flemington and Moonee Valley each taking one and either Caulfield or Mornington another.

The remaining seven, which retain metropolitan prize money and status, will be hosted by premium regional venues.

A total of 14 clubs were involved in switching dates to facilitate the movement of the 10 meetings away from Sandown, the first of those being to Sale on May 13.

Racing is expected to return to Sandown on August 5.
