Rising Romance to join Hayes camp

Sunday 3 May 2015, 3:24pm

David Hayes is excited about the imminent arrival of New Zealand mare Rising Romance to his stable and is already planning an international campaign.

Runner-up to Admire Rakti in last year's Caulfield Cup when trained by Donna Logan, Rising Romance will join the Lindsay Park team of Hayes and Tom Dabernig in the coming weeks.

"The owners just rang me and asked if I would like to train her, Hayes said.

"One of the things they said was if she's going well enough that they would love to travel internationally with her, and I like doing that too."

Hayes nominated the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) in December as a target and said he would wait until the mare arrived before deciding on a spring campaign.

"Once she arrives I'll have a chat with the owners and work it out where they would like to head, Hayes said.

"Whether that's the Cups or the Cox Plate, we'll wait and see.

"She's about to come to me, we'll let her settle in and then we'll build her up from scratch.

Managing owner John Carter said he was sending the mare to Australia to give her the best chance to enhance her record.

"Donna Logan has done a fantastic job and the decision was a hard one," Carter said in a statement.

"However, on balance this is her best chance of winning some more Group Ones before she is likely to be retired.

"Donna is still training other horses for us."

The winner of the 2014 Australian Oaks, Rising Romance hasn't raced since finishing second to Scratchy Bottom in the Epona Stakes at Rosehill on March 21 before a heel injury curtailed the remainder of her Sydney autumn carnival.
