Hyland returns home with King Triton

Monday 4 May 2015, 3:36pm

The annual three-day Warrnambool carnival has been a part of Pat Hyland's life for the best part of 60 years.

Born and bred in the Victorian seaside town, Hyland is one of only seven jockeys to win the four biggest races in Australia - the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper.

Hyland took up training after he retired from the saddle and returns to Warrnambool each year for the carnival which features both flat and jumps racing.

On Tuesday, Hyland will have two runners including King Triton in the day's 3450m feature, the Brierly Steeplechase.

Hyland is counting on a jockey change to bring a change of luck to King Triton who has failed to complete the course in two of his past three starts.

Steven Pateman, a seven-time Tom Corrigan medal winner for riding excellence over jumps, replaces Gavin Bedggood on the seven-year-old.

King Triton only got as far as the first jump in a steeplechase at Oakbank three starts ago before parting company with Bedggood. They didn't get much further in another steeplechase at Ballarat on April 23.

In between was a fifth placing over hurdles at Oakbank during the Easter carnival.

"I haven't had much luck the last three runs with the other jockey," Hyland said.

"A couple of those Irish jockeys go all right, but I think if this bloke (Pateman) has the right cattle underneath him then he'll get the job done.

"The horse seems to be in good shape but he just hasn't had any luck."

King Triton finished fourth in the Brierly Steeplechase last year before backing up two days later to finish fourth in the Grand Annual Steeplechase, but Hyland said he would not run in both races this year.

King Triton has recorded seven of his nine wins over jumps since making his debut over obstacles in 2013.

"He's been a marvellous horse for us over jumps and won just over $210,000 in prize money," Hyland said.

Hyland's other runner on Tuesday, Kirani, lines up in the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club Handicap over 1200m.
