Silent Achiever back after colic attack

Wednesday 6 May 2015, 12:11pm

Star mare Silent Achiever has recovered from a colic attack and will take her place in the Group One Doomben Cup on Saturday.

An early favourite for the 2000-metre weight-for-age race, Silent Achiever is now on the third line of betting after finishing a disappointing eighth in the Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on April 25.

The mare was treated for colic shortly after the Hollindale, although trainer Roger James didn't believe that contributed to her performance at the Gold Coast.

"We would have seen signs of the colic earlier if that had been the case. I was at a loss to explain the run in the Hollindale," James said.

"She has recovered well and I have been keeping a close eye on her.

"I can't fault her and there is no reason she shouldn't run on Saturday."

Doomben was rated soft on Wednesday and James is hoping those conditions prevail on race day.

Silent Achiever has won three of her seven starts on rain-affected ground.

"They are predicting some rain on Thursday and Doomben is usually not as hard as some other tracks," James said.

Silent Achiever has won 10 races and more than $3.6 million prize money but she has been out of the winner's stall since the Group One BMW in April last year.

However, she ran a close third to Adelaide in last year's Cox Plate and finished fourth in two Group One races during the Sydney autumn carnival.

"Saturday will be her grand final in Brisbane and we will see where she heads after that," James said.

Silent Achiever will be one of 15 Doomben Cup runners along with Hollindale Stakes winner Leebaz and Pornichet who will back up from his Toowoomba Cup victory last weekend.

Chris Waller will have five runners headed by Group One winners Foreteller, Moriarty and Hawkspur.

James will also produce promising filly Shees Flawless in the Mick Dittman Plate (1200m) at Doomben.

Shees Flawless has won her past three starts in New Zealand and ran a smart 1:08.89 for her most recent 1200-metre victory at Te Rapa.

James believes he will have a much better idea of the filly's ability after she takes on tougher Australian company on Saturday.

Kerrin McEvoy will ride Silent Achiever and Shees Flawless in their Doomben assignments.
