Atmospherical back in business: Pfieffer

Tuesday 12 May 2015, 5:18pm

An unexpected barrier trial win has convinced trainer David Pfieffer that Atmoshpherical is ready to restore some gloss to her reputation during the Scone Cup carnival.

Atmospherical returns to the NSW country racetrack where she first made a genuine name for herself last year to run in the $140,000 Ortensia Stakes on Saturday.

She takes on the best sprint field of the two-day carnival after an indifferent autumn in Melbourne and Sydney that delivered a first-up Caulfield placing to Chautauqua but not much else.

But Pfieffer heads bush with renewed enthusiasm after a barrier trial win on her home track at Warwick Farm on Monday under Ortensia Stakes jockey Tommy Berry.

"I didn't expect her to win the trial," Pfieffer said.

"I would have been happy if (Tommy) kept her under double wraps but he said he couldn't hold her any slower which is a good sign.

"The let-up she had after the Sydney carnival did her the world of good and she showed that in the trial."

Atmospherical defeated stablemate One Direction in one of the fastest 800m heats of the morning with the runner-up also a part of Pfieffer's Scone team.

Pfieffer will also start Cradle Me in the Ortensia Stakes as the mare kicks off another campaign.

"The barrier draw is not as important to Cradle Me as it is to Atmospherical because she gets back in her races," Pfieffer said.

"Atmospherical raced five wide without cover and still won at Scone last year but hopefully she gets a bit better run this time because the way she trialled on Monday I would be expecting a pretty solid performance."

The Clarry Conners-trained Decision Time heads weights for the Listed sprint with 59kg from Dothraki and Target In Sight which have 58.5kg.

After being given 59kg, ex-New Zealand mare Diademe is the only horse among 26 entries for the $200,000 Dark Jewel Classic which isn't on the 54kg limit.

Victorian three-year-old Boomwaa will be an acceptor for the Scone Guineas although his place in the $400,000 won't be confirmed until after he works at Scone on Thursday morning.

Boomwaa ran down the course at Rosehill on Saturday but received a clean bill of health from vets.

There 19 nominations for the Guineas and the field is restricted to 16 starters.
