Local trainer Rod Northam has stamped his ownership of Scone's Inglis Challenge for two-year-olds, claiming his fourth win in the race with Sargent Doakes.
Northam first won with Okane in 2010 followed by Tinszelda in 2012 and Voodoo Lad last year. This year the win was even more special because the gelding was ridden by the trainer's good friend Robert Thompson.
Part-owner Troy Sargent bought Sargent Doakes at last year's Scone yearling sale. After he failed to sell him at a breeze-up sale, Sargent sent him to Northam to train with a view to winning Friday's race.
"It's a real thrill to win this race again but unfortunately Troy has missed it because his wife has just had a baby," Northam said.
Northam said he was not worried when Sargent Doakes was the last out of the gates and midfield early.
"He is not a big horse but he has a big stride and it takes him a little bit of time to get into stride," he said.
"I think his best distance is going to be 1200 metres so he will probably go to Sydney for a restricted race over that distance."
After missing the start slightly, Thompson pushed Sargent Doakes ($4) along the rail to be running fifth approaching the turn.
He was still on the rail in the straight and looked to be in trouble but managed to ease away and get to the outside.
Once he had galloping room Sargent Doakes let down to quickly take the lead and win by a length from the Kris Lees trained Sunset Strip ($26).
Grafton-trained filly Capricious Spirit, the $2.45 favourite, took the lead at the top of the straight but was under siege at the 200 metres and wilted in the run to the line to finish sixth.
