Randwick brought out the best in Artlee but trainer Todd Willan has picked a racetrack much closer to his stable to help further underline the potential of one of country racing's rising stars.
Artlee, who made a name for himself as a winner during the two days of The Championships last month, will have an even more serious examination of talent in the Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone on Saturday.
The Listed race will bring Artlee's campaign to a close on a track where he is the winner of his only start instead of the Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast.
"Scone is right at our back door so that's why we opted to go there," Willan said.
Bookmakers are in no doubt Muswellbrook-based Willan has made the right move because Artlee is a warm $2.70 favourite to make a winning debut at stakes level.
But it hasn't been the straightforward lead-in Willan would have liked since Artlee sat deep in trouncing a field of bush-trained horses in the Country Championship Final at Randwick.
"If anything he might have had bit too much of a break," Willan said.
To offset a training timetable interrupted by wet weather, Willan has given Artlee an extra piece of work.
"He had a good exhibition gallop ... but I would have liked him to have gone a bit harder so I gave him a jump-out and he cleared out and won that pretty well," Willan said.
Artlee's main opposition is expected to come from Oxford Poet, winner of the only race run on Hawkesbury Gold Cup day, as well as Mighty Lucky and Haussman, the quinella pair in last year's edition.
Mighty Lucky has gone winless in 11 starts since while Haussman is a subsequent Rosehill winner.
