Craig Williams has celebrated his first winner at Scone by dismounting with a star jump, bringing a roar of approval from the huge crowd after Tales Of Grimm scored a narrow win in the Listed Scone Cup.
The Melbourne jockey then walked to the perimeter fence, leaned down and passed his goggles through the chain wire fence to a small girl.
Williams, riding at the track for the first time on Friday, will not forget his win in the Scone Cup (1600m) in a hurry.
The Sam Kavanagh-trained Tales Of Grimm ($8) hit the lead near the 50 metres after chasing down the early leader Strawberry Boy ($8) before Frespanol ($13) momentarily overhauled him.
Under desperate riding from Williams, Tales Of Grimm fought back and refused to give in with the pair hitting the line locked together.
Tales Of Grimm got the decision by a short half head.
"When he got to the lead he seemed to get lost but it was a huge effort to fight back and win," Williams said.
"It is the first time I have ridden him but the minute I got on I fell in love with him.
"We got on really well.
"He is a lovely horse and there is still a lot of improvement in him."
Kavanagh will take Tales Of Grimm to Melbourne for the Winter Championships.
"There is a qualifier he will run in while the final is a Group Three," Kavanagh said.
"This win is a huge thrill for me.
"I have a close association with Scone. I worked on Widden Stud as a kid and I met my partner here so we spend a lot of time in this area.
"I guess you could say this is a bit like coming home and it is a great carnival with great prize money.
"We have won six or seven stakes races but this would have to rate as one of my best wins."
Williams had Tales Of Grimm midfield early but gradually edged forward to be fifth on the fence coming to the turn.
He eased away from the fence, got up on the inside of Strawberry Boy at the 200 metres then got involved in the battle with Frespanol.
