Veteran We're Gonna Rock returns to racing

Friday 22 May 2015, 4:50pm

We're Gonna Rock, the horse who finished closest to Black Caviar than any other Australian sprinter during the last year of her unbeaten career, will return to racing with minimum fanfare at Flemington.

Now trained by Tony Romeo, a horseman with a harness racing background, We're Gonna Rock lines up for just his third run in almost three years in the The Straight Six on Saturday.

When racing out of the Mark Kavanagh stable, We're Gonna Rock chased home Black Caviar in the 2012 Goodwood in Adelaide and was beaten 1-1/4 lengths after giving the mare's legion of fans a minor scare.

But after a three-run campaign which included a first-up win in the Bobbie Lewis Stakes, We're Gonna Rock spent the next two years on the sidelines.

We're Gonna Rock's issues include suspensory injuries, bone chips, a knee problem and arthritis.

The rising nine-year-old resumes after beating one runner home in the Heffernan Stakes at Sandown on November 15.

"I gave him a break and treated his legs after his last run," Romeo said.

"I've given him a slow preparation and his legs are the best they've been since he's been with me.

Romeo mixes training pacers and cast-off thoroughbreds.

Rinaldo, a barrier trial winner in Adelaide in 2013, made a winning racetrack debut for Romeo at Bendigo in February.

And Ghost Valley, off the scene for five years, made a return to racing earlier this month and was placed in a Geelong race this week.
