Into The Red scores up win in Ascot Hcp

Saturday 23 May 2015, 1:28pm

Ryan Wiggins has accidentally found out the best way to ride Into The Red after the sprinter's runaway win in the Ascot Handicap at Doomben.

Wiggins was forced to ditch the script when Into The Red ($17) missed the start before storming from from near last on the turn to win by 2-1/4 lengths.

"The idea was to ride him closer but when he missed the start I had no option but to switch to Plan B," Wiggins said.

"But the way he won today showed that might be the best way to ride him. Let him find his feet early and let him come with one run at them in the straight."

Trainer Kelso Wood has always held Into The Red in high regard and wanted to aim at the Stradbroke Handicap before being forced to shelve those plans.

"He had a bit of setback which meant he came back into work a bit later than expected," Wood said.

"All the jockeys who ride him say he wants further than 1200 metres but the trouble with that is he over-races unless there's plenty of pace on up front."

Wood joked his opinion of Wiggins's ride changed dramatically over the final 400m.

"I went from wringing his neck to giving him a pat on the back," he said.

The win was Into The Red's first since the Gold Edition Plate at Doomben in December 2013.

Jockey Hugh Bowman said was happy with the effort of the $3.80 favourite Delectation who finished strongly from last on the home turn to run third.
