High Midnight has earned the right to join stablemate Zarzali in Brisbane with victory at Randwick confirming a Queensland Derby start.
The Bart and James Cummings-trained Zarzali has already put herself in the frame for the Oaks with a third to Ballet Suite in the Listed Princess Stakes at Doomben two weeks ago.
"High Midnight has to go to the Derby now," James Cummings said.
"He is improving all the time. He is big horse at 560 kilograms and is doing all this in his first preparation."
High Midnight was a $6.50 chance in Saturday's benchmark race over 2000 metres for which the Bjorn Baker-trained Sebrina was the $3 favourite.
As he did on High Midnight's stablemate Tree Of Jesse a race earlier, Tim Clark steered a path along the rail to clinch a short head win over Rye ($13).
Victorian three-year-old Heavy ($3.90) was another two lengths third with the luckless Sebrina fourth.
Trainer Bjorn Baker confirmed Sebrina would head to next week's Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben and was obviously frustrated with Brodie Loy's ride.
Stewards also questioned Loy as to why he had not followed the winner in the straight instead of changing course, firstly trying to get run between horses then switching back to the inside.
Tim Clark rode both the Cummings' winners and said High Midnight's performance was enhanced because he did not settle as well as he would have liked.
"He didn't relax that well in the race and it was a good staying effort," Clark said.
Cummings said Tree Of Jesse would more than likely stay in Sydney rather than accompany her stablemate north.
"Brisbane is a possibility but the prize money is so good here that's where she is most likely to race next," he said.
