Thermogenic cleared for Queensland Derby

Tuesday 26 May 2015, 4:14pm

Impressive last-start Flemington winner Thermogenic is heading to Brisbane for the Queensland Derby.

The Adelaide-trained three-year-old scored a tough win after covering ground in defeating Mr Pago over 1600m last Saturday.

Trainer Phillip Stokes said the colt had come through the run in good order and he was encouraged by the post-race report from jockey Craig Williams who will have the Derby ride at Doomben on June 6.

"When I saw what he was doing before the turn I thought then that he's going well enough to have a crack at the Derby," Stokes said.

"I know he'll run out a strong 2200 metres and Craig's committed to the ride which is always a good sign."

Stokes said the chance to run in the Queensland Derby was too good to knock back after missing out on the South Australian Derby earlier in the month.

The colt didn't have enough prize money after some unlucky performances in the lead-up to the South Australian Derby and Stokes took the opportunity make the trip to Melbourne last Saturday looking to boost the three-year-old's rating heading to the spring.

Stokes said the son of Northern Meteor would leave Melbourne for Brisbane on Wednesday night.

"He's a colt and there's been a few horses hurt on those planes in recent times and we don't want to risk that," Stokes said.

"We'll float him to Sydney, he can spend the day there and then he'll be in Brisbane on Friday morning."

Trust In A Gust was forced to miss a Brisbane campaign after playing up while being prepared to be load on a flight out of Tullamarine airport.
