Hidden Pearl out to reveal true potential

Thursday 28 May 2015, 11:36am

The usually conservative Barry Lockwood has decided to throw boom filly Hidden Pearl in at the deep end in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Hidden Pearl was a maiden when she joined the Lockwood stables earlier this year.

She is unbeaten in three runs for the Eagle Farm trainer, winning by a combined 18 lengths margin in fast times.

Lockwood has taken Hidden Pearl along slowly but he has decided to test her at Doomben.

He entered Hidden Pearl for both the Listed Lightning Handicap and the Bright Shadow, a Listed race for fillies and mares.

Lockwood said Hidden Pearl had done well since her last-start win at Toowoomba on May 2.

"We could have taken her along in restricted class but she would have started to get right up in the weights and the ratings," he said.

"It was time to test her against the better horses when she still gets relatively light weights."

Hidden Pearl has drawn barrier three and will be ridden by Lockwood's apprentice Bridget Grylls.

"Bridget knows her well and while she can't claim I am happy for her to keep the ride," Lockwood said.
