Danny Beasley has shown he has lost none of his touch with front runners, steering Ecuador to a dominant win at Rosehill.
Beasley recently returned to Sydney after eight years in Singapore and said the pace of the races there meant few horses could sustain the lead over longer races.
A decade ago, the jockey formed a multiple Group One-winning association with Grand Armee, a natural leader.
Saturday's winner Ecuador is not in that class but is in the same stable, that of Gai Waterhouse who has been a great support to Beasley in his efforts to break back into the Sydney riding ranks.
"They go so quick in Singapore that horses can't do that," Beasley said.
"Before the race, I thought my horse and Pheidon would jump out and be up there.
"Ecuador jumped a length in front and was comfortable there.
"On his best form he was the best horse in the race and he was comfortable in front.
"He did it so easy in the first part of the race and that's where he won it."
At the end of the Eremein Handicap (1800m), Ecuador, the $4.40 favourite, had 2-1/2 lengths in hand over Slow Pace ($20) with Danchai ($13) another half neck third.
Ecuador's win came at his third start back from a year off because of injury.
"He has come back really well," Beasley said.
"Gai has been a real help since I came back and it's great to be able to win for her.
"She is picking the right horses for me like this one."
