Treve still favourite for a third Arc

Monday 1 June 2015, 11:36am

Treve remains the favourite for an unprecedented third Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe following her comeback win but a couple of challengers have emerged in the form of French Derby winner New Bay and Japan's Duramente.

Treve showed she remained at the peak of her powers with a most impressive winning reappearance in the Group Two Prix Corrida on Friday.

The mare is now set to head back to Saint-Cloud on June 28 as part of her preparation for a return to Longchamp in October.

On Sunday, New Bay gave trainer Andrew Fabre his fourth win in the Prix Du Jockey Club (French Derby) while Duramente was a dominant winner of the Japanese 2000 Guineas.

New Bay is now the clear 8-1 second elect to give Fabre an eighth win in the Arc on October 4 with Treve the 3-1 favourite.

Duramente has been cut to 12-1 to give Japan an elusive Arc win with their horses finishing second three times in the past five years.

Treve's trainer Criquette Head-Maarek said the mare had come through her latest run well but admitted a third Arc would be difficult.

"Treve has recovered very well from her race," Head-Maarek said.

"On Saturday she just stayed in the paddock, which is something I do after every race. She was just walked and had a roll. She came back and ate up.

"Now we go for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, then the Vermeille and the Arc.

"We know the older horses, but not the three-year-olds, and they must not be underestimated."
