The promise of a dry track for Brisbane's biggest race meeting of the year has boosted the chances of Awesome Rock claiming a Group win in the Queensland Guineas.

Co-trainer Troy Corstens says the colt is on target for Saturday's Group Two Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Doomben after his last-start third in the Fred Best Classic.

Awesome Rock has three Group placings but is yet to break through for an important stakes win.

The Doomben surface was in the good range for Saturday's Queensland Oaks meeting with no rain forecast this week.

Awesome Rock failed first-up in the Group Two Euclase Stakes in Adelaide, which Corstens put down to the soft track.

The colt then turned in an encouraging performance over 1350 metres when third to quality filly Najoom in the Fred Best.

"He has come through that run very well and obviously we're looking towards the weather because a wet track is his nemesis," Corstens said.

"We're really looking forward to him staying on a dry track.

"The sectionals that he ran were amazing, and you've only got to look at how good Najooom is.

"We finished off probably better than anything else in the race.

"You'd have to be happy with that run and that's the way that we thought he was (going). That's what made Adelaide so disappointing because we knew that he was going very well and clearly the wet track just didn't suit him in Adelaide."

James McDonald will ride Awesome Rock in the Queensland Guineas which has attracted 24 nominations.

Corstens said they had considered the Stradbroke Handicap but Awesome Rock needed to win the Fred Best to force way in, so they turned their attention to the Guineas.

He believes 1600m will suit and is hoping Awesome Rock can get the job done and then they can turn their attention to the spring carnival.

"A race like the Toorak might be right up his alley," Corstens said.
