VRC to review RV media rights announcement

Saturday 6 June 2015, 1:38pm

The Victoria Racing Club is considering its position on media rights.

Earlier on Saturday, Racing Victoria said it had chosen Seven West Media over Sky as its preferred broadcaster.

"The VRC has been advised of Racing Victoria's board resolution on its preferred outcome for Victoria's media rights," a VRC statement said.

"We are now considering our position on the VRC's media rights with the view to ensuring the best outcome for the club and the Victorian racing industry."

Racing Victoria informed the Melbourne Racing Club, Victoria Racing Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club as well as Country Racing Victoria that Seven West Media is the media partner of choice of Racing Victoria for the future broadcasting of Victorian racing.

Racing Victoria has asked them to independently consider their position on media rights as soon as possible.

Seven West Media, which operates Channel Seven, 7TWO and 7MATE, has proposed to showcase Victorian thoroughbred racing on a dedicated free-to-air channel that would complement a suite of other digital services.

But it is also Racing Victoria's view that Victorian racing continue to be broadcast on Sky Racing, including its domestic service to pubs and clubs and the home, as well as internationally and on digital platforms.

Both Seven West Media and Tabcorp, the owners of Sky Racing, have been informed of Racing Victoria's position.

The media rights for Victorian racing have been up for grabs since the dismantling of TVN in March.

Racing Victoria chairman, David Moodie, said his board was excited by the potential of the proposed Seven West Media partnership.

He also noted the importance of the ongoing alliance in its joint venture with wagering partner Tabcorp and that Racing Victoria is committed to the partnership's growth.

Seven West Media televise 25 Victorian meetings throughout the year, including the four days of the VRC's Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington.

The Melbourne Racing Club has been a strong supporter of Seven West Media holding the media rights.
