Apprentices combine for Moonee Valley win

Saturday 6 June 2015, 5:46pm

As one apprentice gained some experience on the other side of the fence at Moonee Valley another consolidated his position as the leading junior rider in Melbourne.

Sidelined with a fractured fibula, Tom Sadler deputised for his father John as Digitalism made it two wins from her past four starts.

A leading Melbourne trainer, John Sadler has been in Queensland for yearling sales.

Ridden by fellow apprentice Patrick Moloney, Digitalism ($7.50) tracked the leader and favourite Kenjorwood ($2.70) to the turn before holding off Cadillac Mountain ($12) to score by a length in the Dominant Handicap.

Sadler has started rehabilitation and will return to riding trackwork on Monday week, with hopes of being available for race rides soon after.

"I enjoy working with the stable and helping out but while the riding is going well I'll concentrate on that," Sadler said.

"Dad's been up at the sales for the week and then he's had a bit of a freshen up and it's given me the opportunity to get a bit of experience on the other side of the fence."

Sadler praised the ride of Moloney who followed instructions to the letter.

He said the plan was to follow Kenjorwood and apply pressure before the turn.

The victory was Moloney's second for the meeting and his 36th for the season, 10 behind premiership leader Damien Oliver.

"Pat's riding in great form but I'm looking forward to getting back and giving him a run for his money," Sadler said.

Moloney's double followed on from his treble at Moonee Valley last week and has him in fourth spot on the overall premiership table.

He now leads Regan Bayliss by six winners on the Melbourne apprentices' table.

"I just want to keep riding consistently well," Moloney said.

"If I keep on doing that then the numbers will take care of themselves."

Moloney has another 12 winners to go before he posts a career goal of outriding his metropolitan claim while a Melbourne jockeys' title would top off his season.

His first winner for the day provided trainer Paul Kramer with his first city success when Prince Rahy took out the Caffeto Handicap.
