The regally bred Wonder Kid will do his future racing in Hong Kong following his debut win at Mornington.

Wonder Kid is a three-year-old by champion racehorse and sire Lonhro out of Valkyrie Diva, a half-sister to three time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.

Dean Hawkes, who manages the gelding for owner Kenny Cheng and partners Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu when he comes to Australia for yearling sales, says Wonder Kid will leave Australia as soon as possible.

"We've waited a while but this win qualifies him and he'll be booked on the first available flight to Hong Kong," Hawkes said.

"We always knew he had a bit of ability but he's had a few issues over the last 12 months or so.

"He's finally come good and he does like a bit of cut in the track which helps."

Ridden by Mark Zahra and sent out the $2.90 favourite in the Toronado @ Swettenham (1200m), Wonder Kid raced on the speed and kicked clear in the straight, holding off Strong Hand ($3) by a long neck with Unruly Student ($8) 2-1/4 lengths away third.

Trainer Pat Carey was resigned to losing the horse to Hong Kong from the outset but took a lot of satisfaction from the victory.

"He won his trial nice, albeit a half-mile trial, but coming here raceday and getting the job done is another thing," Carey said.

"He's a lovely bred horse that is going to get better with a bit of age."

Zahra said there was a lot to like about the victory as the gelding shared the lead with Johnny Yuma who was laying out for most of the race.

He said the pair were going head and head before Wondedr Kid was able to take the lead on the home turn.

"He gave a good kick on the turn and then stargazed but did give a good kick late when the runner-up came to him," Zahra said.

"It was a nice win from a promising horse."
