Riding Royal Ascot hopeful Criterion in trackwork in England has led Chad Schofield to the biggest opportunity of his career.
Schofield has been confirmed as Criterion's jockey in next week's Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, getting the nod over Damien Oliver and Craig Williams who has ridden the horse in his past three starts.
In England for a riding stint, Schofield has been partnering the David Hayes-trained Criterion in his fast gallops as he builds towards the Royal Ascot carnival.
It proved a critical factor in the decision of owner Sir Owen Glenn to book Schofield for the race day ride.
The 21-year-old, who rode his first winner in England last week at Bath, had his first look at the Royal Ascot course when he rode Criterion in a gallop there last week.
"Although there wasn't many people there early in the morning, I couldn't help but picture all the thousands of people that will turn up in their top hat and tails and what a great atmosphere there will be throughout the carnival," Schofield told Melbourne radio station RSN on Thursday.
"I'm really looking forward to it and I'm absolutely thrilled to get the ride and the opportunity. And it's up to me now to get the job done."
Schofield has ridden four Group One winners in Australia, most notably Shamus Award in the 2013 Cox Plate.
He regards Criterion as a live chance at the Royal Ascot meeting.
"The horse seems to have acclimatised very well," he said.
"His work has been great, he's feeling fantastic and he's looking brilliant so I can't wait for next Wednesday and hopefully we can give it a good shake."
