Three-year-old gelding Real Sting made a statement at Doomben on Wednesday with a barnstorming win at only his fourth race start.

It was looking precarious for Real Sting through the early stages of the 1640 metre maiden as he raced ungenerously in the back half of a slowly run affair.

In the home straight, jockey Tim Bell brought the son of Real Saga to the outside and he let down with a surprising sprint to win by a narrow margin.

Immaturity had restricted the horse early in his career so Wednesday's win was a pleasing result for all involved.

Trainer Steve O'Dea astutely recognized Real Sting was looking for ground and so elected to tackle the 1640 metres second-up and it paid dividends.

Real Sting was purchased from the draft of Attunga Stud $40k.
