Timeless Prince set for Queensland return

Saturday 20 June 2015, 4:40pm

Timeless Prince has had one trip to Queensland this winter and has earned another with victory in the Winter Dash at Randwick.

Trained at Gosford by Tony Newing, Timeless Prince was an $8 chance in Saturday's race run on a track rated by many jockeys as the heaviest they had ridden on.

With a 2kg claim for Winona Costin, Timeless Prince got into the 1200m race with 52kg, 2kg less than any of his rivals.

While many jockeys had taken inside runs during the day, Costin decided the best ground was out wide and brought Timeless Prince down the grandstand side.

"He needed to run today because we have a plan to take him to the Listed Tattersall's Mile at Doomben on the 18th of July," Newing said.

"He has good form on firm tracks but I thought he would handle the ground and left it up to Winona where to go.

"He needs to be held up and to come with one run and it was a textbook ride."

The gelding beat Alias ($6) by a length with the same margin to See The World ($6).

Newing took Timeless Prince to run at the Sunshine Coast on June 8 and although he didn't run a place, it prepared him for things to come.

"I wanted to get some sun on his back," he said.

"He is a good traveller and he was first-up that day but has improved."

Favourite Wouldnt It Be Nice ($2.50) came out of the barrier slowly and failed to show the late turn of foot which won him the Listed June Stakes.

Early leader Zaratone finished fourth.

Costin said the race panned out how she wanted.

"He had the momentum up and I think out wide is the place to be," she said.

The win brought up a double for Costin, a runaway leader in the Sydney apprentices' premiership.

Costin also scouted wide on the Jason Coyle-trained Berry Delicious in the Benchmark 78 over 1400m.
