Suavito gearing up for Group One races

Sunday 21 June 2015, 2:45pm

Nigel Blackiston will have Suavito primed for a first-up Group One win in the early spring, aiming for a repeat of his autumn training coup with the classy mare.

Suavito began the autumn with victory in the Futurity Stakes (1400m), accounting for Smokin' Joey and leading Horse of the Year contender Dissident.

The daughter of Thorn Park will be aimed at the Memsie Stakes over the same course and distance in the first Group One race of the season, the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on August 29.

A winner of two of her three starts last campaign, Suavito hasn't raced since finishing seventh to Kermadec in the Doncaster Mile at Randwick in April.

Blackiston said Suavito would be entered for the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate with the option of coming back to mares' company if her form didn't measure up.

"She'll be given every opportunity to try and get to one of those races but if we don't think she'll measure up we'll come back to mares' grade and maybe look at the Myer Stakes," Blackiston said.

"She's put on some nice condition since the Doncaster and has come back into the stable in good order."

Stablemate Let's Make Adeal is still in Queensland after finishing fourth in the Brisbane Cup (2200m) at Doomben on June 6.

Blackiston said he would take advantage of the warmer weather before she returns to Melbourne to prepare for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

He said it was owner Dennis Marks' ambition to run the grand daughter of his 1991 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups winner Let's Elope in those races.

Last spring Let's Make Adeal narrowly missed qualifying for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

"She just missed out on getting a run in the Cups last year and it's Dennis's ambition to have her run this year," Blackiston said.

"She's having a couple of weeks off in the sun in Queensland before she comes back down for the spring."
