Criterion set for Juddmonte International

Wednesday 24 June 2015, 4:02pm

Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Criterion will have one more run in England before returning to Australia to contest the Cox Plate.

Trainer David Hayes said Criterion would run in the Juddmonte International over 2000m at York on August 19.

Criterion will return to Australia with the first shipment of international horses for the Melbourne spring carnival.

The rising five-year-old will go into quarantine at Werribee in late September in preparation for the Cox Plate on October 24.

The Juddmonte International has been ranked as the best race in the world by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities with previous winners including Australia, Frankel and Sea The Stars.

The race carries $1.7 million prize money.

Hayes said Criterion had come through his fifth placing behind Free Eagle in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 17 in good order.

"He's just having an easy week or two now and will then be built up for the Juddmonte," Hayes said.

Chad Schofield, who rode Criterion at Royal Ascot, is likely to keep the ride.

Schofield heads to South Africa to ride the Australian-bred The Conglomerate in the Group One Durban July at Greyville.

After his UK stint Schofield will take up a six-month contract in Hong Kong, beginning in September.

"If Chad is still there in England he'll probably ride him, otherwise we'll work something out later," Hayes said.
