Bargain buy Avalanches has moved through the grades to earn a shot at open company at the Sunshine Coast.
Trainer Trevor Bailey paid $25,000 for the gelding at a Darley dispersal sale last year and Avalanches has rewarded his new owners with six wins in Queensland.
He won a Benchmark 85 race at Ipswich over 1666m last month and steps up to Saturday's Troy Trevitt Homes Open Hcp (1600m).
"We picked him up for $25,000 at a Darley sale and he has won six races and about $160,000 in prize money," Bailey said.
"If he wins on Saturday he will go past $200,000 since we bought him so he really will be a bargain."
Despite Avalanches being bred to stay, Bailey believes he is at his best between 1600 to 1800 metres.
Bailey did try Avalanches at 2000m in last year's Group Three Rough Habit Plate but the gelding didn't run out the trip.
"It means there isn't much around for him in the benchmark races at 1600-1800 metres and let's hope he isn't a victim of his consistency," Bailey said.
"But I think he is up to open class and he can prove it on Saturday.
"His best run was at 1600 metres when second to Hopfgarten in the Gunsynd Plate and I think he is a stronger horse now."
Ryan Wiggins takes over from the suspended Jim Byrne.
Among Avalanches' opponents is last-start Gold Coast winner Addictive Habit who has been transferred from New Zealand trainer Lee Somervell to Bevan Laming for the rest of his Queensland campaign.
