A dominant Caulfield win from Green Card recently has boosted trainer Robbie Griffiths' hopes that two-year-old Bellomo will measure up when he makes his city debut at Flemington.
Bellomo finished second, albeit beaten 4-1/4 lengths, to the Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison-trained Green Card at Bendigo last month on debut after being slowly away.
Bellomo then won a maiden on the synthetic track at Geelong by 1-1/4 lengths after leading while Green Card stepped out at Caulfield a few days later and stamped himself as a spring prospect with a four-length win on July 4.
Griffiths has taken that result as an encouraging sign for Bellomo who steps out in town for the first time in Saturday's The Flemington Family Handicap (1200m).
"He was good at his first start when he missed the start and finished second," Griffiths said.
"He was beaten a margin but that margin has since been justified because Green Card won by the same lengths at Caulfield. So that's a good form reference.
"Seeing him (Green Card) win with such strength at Caulfield gives us some encouragement going into Saturday."
Griffiths said Bellomo did everything right at Geelong and expects him to position close to the speed again on Saturday, when he will have his first start down the Flemington straight.
"He's trained really well during the week to suggest he's going to be in the mix, it's just a question of how he handles himself down the straight," he said.
Bellomo is one of four last-start winners in Saturday's juvenile race including Godolphin's Demonstrate.
Griffiths also has She Can Shazam and Moment Of Pride entered for Flemington races and said the Dalray Handicap (1100m) for three-year-olds was a chance to test lightly-raced Moment Of Pride.
Moment Of Pride has had three starts, winning on debut at Sale and then running on from last for third at his most recent start at Pakenham.
"I think he's a nice horse but whether he's ready for this level, that's what Saturday is about," Griffiths said.
"I'm throwing him in the deep end and seeing if he can swim."
