Stablehand charged over offensive tweets

Thursday 16 July 2015, 6:10pm

Former jockey and now registered stablehand Daniel Schmitt faces a RAD Board hearing over a series of offensive, racist and derogatory tweets posted in the past 12 months.

Stewards allege that the series of tweets published by Schmitt as a registered and recognisable participant in the Victorian racing industry is prejudicial to the image of racing.

Schmitt has been charged under a rule that any person, in the opinion of stewards, has been guilty of conduct prejudicial to the image, interests, or welfare of racing and may be penalised.

Racing Victoria stewards opened an inquiry on Thursday into a series of tweets posted by Schmitt before charging him.

During the inquiry evidence was taken from Schmitt and a review was undertaken of his Twitter account and the associated publicity his tweets had generated.

The charge against Schmitt will be heard on a date to be fixed.
