Choice Bro breaks win drought at Doomben

Saturday 18 July 2015, 1:36pm

A short break in the paddock helped former star kiwi galloper Choice Bro bounce back from a race fall to win his first race in 30 months on Saturday.

Choice Bro ($10) came from well back in the field to score by 1 3/4 lengths to Discreet ($9) with Zaha's Ace ($6) a 3/4 length back in the Tattersall's Racing Club Open (1200m) at Doomben.

It was five-year-old Choice Bro's first win in Australia and his first victory since taking a Listed race at Ellerslie on January 27, 2013.

Since then Choice Bro has had a stint in Sydney with John Sargent where his best effort was a third to star galloper Boban in the 2013 Group Three Bill Ritchie Hcp.

Choice Bro has been with Toowoomba trainer Tony Sears for the past 18 months and, while he hasn't won, has raced with little luck.

Sears said he thought Choice Bro would race well after he worked strongly on Tuesday.

"But I must admit I thought he would run second to my mare (Zaha's Ace)," Sears said.

"He fell in the Rockhampton Cup at his previous start and we brought him home to a short rest.

"He had 10 days in the paddock and then we brought him along slowly, keeping him fresh."

Sears said he believed Choice Bro had shown he was more of a 1200m to 1400m horse than a 1600m galloper.

"We have got him out to 1600m, but I really think he is better at the shorter races. We will keep him to those," he said.

Jockey Tim Bell said Choice Bro had appreciated the fast early pace and was able to come home with a strong run.

Sears was also pleased with Zaha's Ace's run as the mare led at a fast clip.

Trainer Kelly Schweida said stud bound Discreet could have one more start in a 1200m handicap at Doomben in a fortnight.
