Racing returns to Sandown after renovation

Tuesday 4 August 2015, 12:08pm

Metropolitan racing in Melbourne returns to Sandown on Wednesday for the first time in four months after remedial work on the track.

The surface at Sandown came in for criticism earlier this year which prompted officials to shift meetings away from the venue for the remainder of the 2014/15 season so that remedial work could be undertaken.

Sandown has not hosted a meeting since early April but was given the tick of approval for Wednesday's return meeting after a series of jumpouts were conducted at the track two weeks ago.

There are four meetings at Sandown in the next month before another session of remedial work is scheduled ahead of the feature Zipping Classic and Sandown Guineas meeting in November.

Wednesday's eight-race meeting is on the Hillside course.

There will be interest in the first race with three-year-old colt Last Typhoon, the only foal out of the late mare Typhoon Tracy, entered to make his debut with Dwayne Dunn booked for the ride.

Jockey Chris Parnham notched a winner at the season-opening city meeting at Moonee Valley on Saturday for trainer Darren Weir on Lake Sententia and the Weir-trained Conwell forms part of a book of four rides for Parnham on Wednesday.

Parnham rode 83 winners nationwide last season but is aiming to improve on that in the 2015/16 season.

"My main goal is to ride 100 winners (this season)," Parnham said.

"Last season I rode 83 winners so this season I want to try to get to 100.

"And I'd like to be up there in the top six or seven in the city premiership (in Melbourne)."

Parnham hails from Western Australia and made the move to base himself in Victoria in January.

Four-year-old mare Conwell is entered for Wednesday's The Cove Hotel Handicap (1600m) having won two of her three starts.

She has notched back-to-back wins with a maiden win at Echuca and then a victory at Morphettville.

Parnham is also booked to ride the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Ancient Bull, the John McArdle-trained Kazemi and the Wez Hunter-trained Leventi.
