Sandown's track renovation has gained the seal of approval from officials and jockeys.
Sandown held a meeting on Wednesday for the first time in four months after problems with the surface during March and April forced the transfer of meetings.
Starting out as a soft six rating, the track was downgraded to a soft seven after showers fell early in the program.
"The number one thing for us was that it is safe," Racing Victoria's chief steward Terry Bailey said.
"That was the problem before this, they they were slipping and sliding, but at least this track is safe.
"I don't think you'll see the benefits until we get some warm weather."
Bailey noted that the track was starting to cut up which he said was only natural given the number of races run during the day.
He also said the rain had an effect on the track.
Senior jockey Dwayne Dunn expected a heavier track.
He said while there was some kickback it wasn't the same that was experienced before the renovation.
"It's lifting a bit, but its more like sand," Dunn said.
"They must have put a lot of sand on it when they did their renovation and let the grass knit into it.
"Hopefully it's an end to the problems they've had."
Sandown racecourse manager Tim Bailey said the track was tested with showers during the day but at the end of the day was happy with its condition.
He said the main thing was the track was safe for racing.
"Unfortunately the showers during the day caused the track to deteriorate," he said.
"As the weather improves over the next month I'm sure it will continue to improve."
Sandown holds meetings on August 12, August 26 and September 2 and will undergo another renovation before its main meeting of the year, Sandown Guineas and Zipping Classic day on November 14.
