A runaway barrier trial win has boosted trainer Phillip Stokes' hopes of Eclair Choice running a big race first-up in the Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Eclair Choice sped to a 6-1/2 length win in a trial on a heavy track at Morphettville on August 7, clocking easily the fastest time of the trial session in his 1000m heat.
Chasing him home in the trial was Alpine Eagle.
Eclair Choice, winner of the Listed Redelva Stakes last campaign, has drawn nicely in barrier two in a field of 13 for Saturday's Listed sprint which is headlined by dual Group winner and multiple Group One placegetter Gregers.
Gregers is the $3 favourite in the TAB's early market with Eclair Choice at $3.20 after also opening $3 on Wednesday.
"His trial was very good," Stokes said.
"I put blinkers on him for the first time and I don't know if that had anything to do with it but I've decided to leave them on for Saturday.
"If you go back through his form, the horse (Setinum) that won the Regal Roller Stakes on Saturday was the horse that beat him in the Bendigo Guineas last preparation, so that probably stands him in good stead."
Stokes will use Saturday's 1000m race as a guide on where to head next with Eclair Choice.
"He's obviously just turned four and is taking on older horses for the first time which is always very hard, but going on his trial I thought that was good enough to go first-up into a race like this," Stokes said.
Stokes said Eclair Choice has always been a reasonably smart horse but the gelding surprised him in the trial and he noted it was the first time the four-year-old had been on a heavy track.
Eclair Choice, winner of four of his 12 starts, has raced twice at Moonee Valley including a win in a benchmark race for three-year-olds last November. He finished fourth on debut in a race for two-year-olds in December, 2013.
Gregers has barrier 11 and will be out to improve on an impressive first-up record having won three of her five first-up starts.
She was beaten narrowly by Platelet over 955m first-up last campaign at Moonee Valley while her only other first-up run was a fourth in the Group One Oakleigh Plate last year.
Gregers won a jump-out stylishly at Flemington last Friday.
