Robert Smerdon is still not sure what level Real Time can reach this season, but he will give the sprinter-miler every chance to make an impact during the spring carnival.
Lightly raced five-year-old Real Time kicked off his campaign at Caulfield on Saturday and surged to the front at the 100m to score by a length over Squeaky Squirrel with 1-1/4 lengths to Kayjay's Joy in third.
Real Time ($7.50) had not raced since winning on Magic Millions day at the Gold Coast in January, his fourth win from seven starts in his first racing campaign.
Smerdon said he opted not to look at the Brisbane winter or Sydney autumn and instead give the horse a nice break with a view to spring.
He believes there are plenty of options available for Real Time up to 1600m.
"We're going to keep climbing the ladder but give him an opportunity in races where he's competive," the trainer said.
"Hopefully he gets into Group racing."
