Kentucky Flyer continues Derby campaign

Friday 18 September 2015, 3:06pm

The week isn't going as well as it started for Victoria Derby aspirant Kentucky Flyer.

Trainer Robbie Laing's decision to gallop Kentucky Flyer between races at Cranbourne on Sunday proved to be a masterstroke when the club's grass tracks were closed for trackwork on Tuesday because it was too wet.

Laing saw enough in Kentucky Flyer's work to say he should be looking forward to The Cove Hotel Handicap at Caulfield with the promising three-year-old.

But as the race draws closer, Laing is starting to find negatives for Kentucky Flyer, a last-start winner at Moonee Valley over 1500m carrying 59kg.

He has 60kg and a wide draw to overcome on Saturday.

"There's a few negatives," Laing said."

"The 60 kilos, plus the vest, at his fourth start in a race," Laing said.

"Plus he's got barrier 13, it's the last race of the day and the track will be chopping up.

Kentucky Flyer will follow the same path to the Victoria Derby as Laing's 2013 winner Polanski as he heads to the UCI Stakes at Flemington on October 4 before the Caulfield Classic on October 17.
