Grand Proposal takes to the Highway

Monday 9 November 2015, 5:20pm

The chance to give Grand Proposal another crack at city racing means trainer Neville Layt will bypass the Snake Gully Cup to run the mare at Rosehill.

Grand Proposal won the inaugural Highway Handicap at Randwick on October 17, a ninth race added to Saturday metropolitan programs restricted to country-trained horses.

Layt said his owners were thrilled to win a race in the city and would be back at Rosehill this week for the 1400m Class Three handicap.

"We were going to the Snake Gully Cup at Gundagai on Friday but the plan now is to run her on Saturday and then think about the Country Championships in April," Layt said.

"She just missed out on a start this year. She can win another of these races and still be eligible for the Country Championships next year which is worth a lot of money."

After her Randwick win, Grand Proposal returned to the track on Melbourne Cup day for a benchmark race but didn't recover after getting a long way back early and finished 10th of 12, beaten 3-1/2 lengths.

There are seven heats and a "wild card" race before the $300,000 Country Championships final. The first heat is at Goulburn on February 20 which will be the aim for Grand Proposal.

The mare is one of 24 entries for Saturday's race in which she will be ridden by champion Sydney apprentice Winona Costin.

The Danny Williams-trained Luxury, third in a Highway race at Rosehill on October 31, is the top-rated nomination.
